House Fire

fire2
Contented cat on treasured knee
roaring hearth fire to embrace
cocoon of all protection
shields outside lamplight from your face

the flames alive with colour
the wood suffusing smell
a warmth embodied safety
darkness dispelled as well

this evening’s cloak of orange
the hope it might always stay
wrapped round us all so tightly
keeping reality at bay

fan flames though oh so gently
for though the glow might lull to sleep
we have a limit on our resources
so strong a fire you cannot keep

for it shall not last forever
if we should burn all of our wood
when comes the dawn of daylight
the cold will come for good

in time the fire will fall to embers
its failing heat and light
but for now we have catharsis
in its handling of the night.
